Cyclones sweep double-header; Jump out to 2-0 start

In an early morning double header to begin the 2009 Fall Season, the story was all Cyclones as they pounded the Middlesex Twins for 20 runs on 26 hits in both games, while only allowing 8 runs and 16 hits against their newly revamped pitching staff. Lead by the dominant 6 inning performance of Albert Cortes in Game 1, the Cyclones poured it on after the third inning. Michael Ruzek, Connor Viglianti, and Albert Cortes (3, 4, 5 hitters) combined for 5 hits and 4 RBI. The game stayed close until the late innings, when Zarobinski seemed to lose some velocity on his fastball, leading to a 4 run 6th inning for the Cyclones. John Homenuk picked up the 4 out save, though he had an expansive lead by the time he re-entered in for the 7th inning.

The Cyclones dug themselves a hole early as starting pitcher James Strickhart seemed to have trouble with his command. The Twins pounded out 4 runs on 4 hits in the first inning, including 2 walks. The Cyclones battled right back in the bottom of the first when John Homenuk walked to lead off the inning. Following his steal of second and third, Homenuk chose the right pitch to steal home and give the Cyclones a jolt, closing the deficit to 3 runs. By that time Albert Cortes was already standing on third, igniting a rally in the first inning that eventually would tie the game. The Cyclones brought more in the 2nd and 3rd innings, as the bottom of the lineup loaded the bases with consecutive singles and a walk. John Homenuk blooped a two run single into left field, followed by RBI singles by Cortes, Davis and Rusek to pad the lead. The Cyclones never looked back, finishing a 12-6 victory as Strickhart settled down for the remaining 5 innings. Manager Mike Rusek handed the ball to Homenuk again in the 7th, and he converted his second save despite walking a batter and giving up an RBI single to right.
